By Shield Law Firm5 min read

Victim of online fraud, UPI scam, or hacking? Learn exactly how to file a cyber crime complaint online in India in 2026 — step-by-step guide covering cybercrime.gov.in, helpline 1930, and what to do after filing.

Cyber crime in India is growing at an alarming rate. According to recent data, cybersecurity incidents surged from 10.29 lakh in 2022 to over 22.68 lakh in 2024 — a 120% increase in just two years. Indians lost over ₹22,845 crore to cyber frauds in 2024 alone. Whether you've been a victim of UPI fraud, online investment scams, hacking, identity theft, or a romance scam — knowing how to report it quickly can make the difference between recovering your money and losing it forever.

This guide walks you through the complete, updated process to file a cyber crime complaint online in India in 2026.

Why You Must Act Fast

Time is critical in cyber crime cases — especially financial fraud. Reporting a UPI or banking fraud within 24–72 hours significantly increases the chances of freezing the fraudster's account before the money is moved. The longer you wait, the harder recovery becomes.

Step 1: Call Helpline 1930 Immediately

The very first thing you should do after realising you are a victim of cyber fraud is call 1930 — India's National Cyber Crime Helpline, operated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • Available 24/7

  • Covers financial frauds, UPI scams, OTP theft, online cheating

  • After reporting, you will receive an acknowledgement number via SMS

  • Use this acknowledgement number to file your full complaint online within 24 hours

This call alone can trigger an alert to banks and payment platforms to freeze fraudulent transactions in progress.

Step 2: Collect and Preserve All Evidence

Before visiting the portal, gather all evidence related to the crime. This is crucial — poor documentation is the most common reason complaints stall. Collect the following:

  • Screenshots of fraudulent messages, calls, emails, or social media profiles

  • Bank transaction records showing unauthorized transfers

  • Email headers (for phishing or threatening emails)

  • URLs or links shared by the fraudster

  • Phone numbers or UPI IDs used by the scammer

  • Any receipts, agreements, or invoices sent by the fraudster

Save everything in both digital and printed form. Do not delete any messages or emails — they are legal evidence.

Step 3: Visit the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

Go to www.cybercrime.gov.in — the official Government of India portal managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On the homepage, you will see two main sections:

  • Report Women/Child Related Crime — for crimes involving harassment, sexual exploitation, or abuse of women and children (can also be filed anonymously)

  • Report Other Cyber Crimes — for financial fraud, hacking, identity theft, social media crimes, cryptocurrency fraud, ransomware, etc.

For most financial fraud and online scam cases, select "Report Other Cyber Crimes."

Step 4: Register and Login

Click on "Citizen Login" and register using:

  • Your full name

  • A valid Indian mobile number

You will receive an OTP on your mobile number. Enter the OTP and complete the CAPTCHA to proceed. Note that the OTP is valid for only 30 minutes.

Step 5: Fill the Complaint Form

The complaint form is divided into 4 sections:

Section 1 — Incident Details

  • Select the category of crime (e.g., Online Financial Fraud, Hacking, Social Media Crime)

  • Enter the date, time, and description of the incident

  • Provide all relevant transaction details, phone numbers, and URLs

Section 2 — Evidence Upload

  • Upload screenshots, bank statements, call recordings, and any other supporting documents

  • Make sure files are clear and properly labelled

Section 3 — Suspect Details

  • Enter any known details about the fraudster — name, phone number, UPI ID, bank account, email, or social media profile

  • If unknown, you can skip this section

Section 4 — Preview and Submit

  • Review all details carefully before submitting

  • Once satisfied, click Submit

After submission, you will receive a complaint reference number via SMS and email. Keep this number safe — you will need it to track your case.

Step 6: Follow Up and Track Your Complaint

Use the "Track Your Complaint" feature on cybercrime.gov.in to monitor the status of your case. Your complaint is forwarded to the concerned State/UT cyber cell based on the location you selected.

If you do not receive any response within a reasonable time, you can:

  • Visit your nearest Cyber Crime Police Station with a printed copy of your complaint

  • Escalate by filing a formal FIR at your local police station

  • Approach a cyber crime lawyer for legal intervention

Important Update for 2026: Under the e-Zero FIR initiative introduced by MHA in May 2025, complaints involving financial losses above ₹10 lakh filed on the NCRP portal automatically trigger registration of a Zero FIR with the e-Crime Police Station of Delhi, ensuring faster action.

What Happens After You File?

Once your complaint is registered:

  1. It is assigned to the relevant State/UT police cyber cell

  2. Investigators may contact you for additional information

  3. In financial fraud cases, coordination with banks and payment platforms begins to freeze fraudulent accounts

  4. If sufficient evidence exists, an FIR is registered and investigation begins

When Should You Hire a Cyber Crime Lawyer?

While filing on the portal is free and does not require a lawyer, professional legal help becomes essential when:

  • Your complaint is not being acted upon

  • The fraud amount is significant (₹1 lakh or more)

  • Your bank account has been frozen due to linked fraud

  • You are receiving threats or facing extortion

  • You need to escalate to the High Court or pursue asset recovery

An experienced cyber crime lawyer can file the right petitions, engage directly with investigating officers, and significantly speed up the process of account unfreezing and fund recovery.
